We do all types of cabochon cutting from standard shapes and sizes to freeform. We can cut from your material or ours. We are
highly skilled at cutting calibrated sizes for bezel settings. We currently do not handle corundum cabbing. We can process
individual stones or production orders. Unless otherwise discussed, all of our cabochons are cut in the classic bezel style;
a polished flat back, with a bezel back-cut angled at roughly twelve degrees and a rounded dome. The traditional cabochon design can be modified to a slightly flat or flattened top to accommodate picture scenes found in jaspers or agates, watermelon tourmalines, or material that lends itself to flatwork.
All of our cabochons are polished using state of the art diamond tools and compounds. Due to the nature of the material
itself and the various idiosyncrasies associated with minerals, sometimes small pinholes and natural fractures can be
found on cabochons. We like to offer our cabochons to you in their natural state; however, these slight imperfections
can be filled in upon request. We will disclose this to you if these features exist.
Loss of material in cabochon cutting isn't as high as in faceting, and could be as low as 30%. The cost of
cabochon rough varies from low to very high. Rough material runs the gambit from rocks in your backyard to ruby
and other fine minerals. We have on hand most standard cabbing material and specialize in jaspers and agates.
Custom cabochon work is available at a rate of $30 an hour. On the average, for normal sizes and shapes, it takes
less than an hour and will be billed out accordingly. However, large or fancy cabochons fabricated from difficult
material will cost more. Please understand that due to the unique patterning and/or coloration of rough material,
matching cabochons can sometimes be difficult or impossible to produce.
